Do dry lips during pregnancy mean it’s a boy or girl or it is just an early sign of pregnancy? Dry or dry peeling lips during pregnancy has nothing to do with the baby’s gender, but it affects some women and it often occurs during the first trimester. However, some women experience it in their second or third trimester.

Why does it occur or causes?

Dryness of lips and skin generally is a common condition associated with pregnancy. This is mostly caused by dehydration; your body is working extra hard to make sure that you and your baby are healthy and therefore it may be devoid of enough fluids to keep the skin supple. Pregnant women also pee a lot, meaning that you could be losing more fluids than normal.

Treatment for dry lips during pregnancy

The severity of pregnancy dry lips will depend on the type of skin you have, climatic conditions and the environment you are in. Some women will develop extremely dry lips while others may not even be affected by the problem.

1. Stay hydrated

You should drink plenty of fluids to rehydrate your body and prevent your lips from drying. It is recommended that a person drinks at least 64 ounces of water per day. Enough fluids are often the most important remedy this problem caused by dehydration. Water is also important for the general health of your growing baby.

2. Avoid licking them

Most people do this involuntarily thinking that it will soften their dry lips. But ironically licking them does the worst by aggravating the situation. As the saliva evaporates from its surface, it takes with it more moisture thus leaving them drier. Resist the temptation to lick them however dry they are.

3. Make Vaseline Petroleum jelly your friend

Vaseline works wonder to keep the skin moisturized and it will do the same on your lips. The jelly helps to lock moisture in and prevent the dry flaky lips from forming. You should protect them by applying a layer of Vaseline Jelly before going out. Yes, pregnant women can use a petroleum jelly like Vaseline.

4. Exfoliate at least twice per week

This is the best treatment especially if you suffer from extremely dry, cracked and chapped lips during pregnancy. You can exfoliate them by using an old toothbrush. Brush them to remove the dead flaky skin and then apply a natural moisturizer like coconut oil.

Another exfoliator is a mixture of honey and sugar. Mix three tablespoons of honey with the same amount of sugar. Gently massage your lips using the mixture. This will remove the dead skin.

5. Use the right lotion

I understand that lip balms, lipsticks and lotions are always the primary care products. But which one of them is the best lotion in cases where they are dry? Using the wrong balms can aggravate or worsen your drying problem. Using expired and cheap products can also cause this lip dryness and dry mouth problems during pregnancy.

Cosmetologists suggest using products that have Vitamin E because of its healing properties. The following are some of the products you can use to ensure they are adequately moisturized.

a). Lansinoh Lanolin nipple cream

This cream has been developed for breastfeeding mothers to soothe and protect sore cracked nipples. But some women have found this cream to work perfectly if applied. The cream will help get rid of your dry, cracked and chapped lips. A breastfeeding mom does not need to remove the cream before feeding her baby, meaning it is safe even for you.

b). MooGoo Edible Balm

MooGoo products offer the best moisturizing solution for dry peeling lips during pregnancy. This is a safe natural moisturizer without any chemicals. It is also edible. The company has got an array of different products which are made for specific purposes. You can either choose the MooGoo natural strawberry, the Tingling Honey or Cow Lick Balms depending on your preferences.

c). Oralife peppermint ointment

Some reviewers claim that this is the most hydrating balm on the market but don’t quote me on that. It soothes, softens, conditions and heals your lips. This ointment guarantees you baby soft lips with no more peeling. It is not sticky, it glides easily and you will also love the peppermint smell. Another pro is that it is very cheap compared to other similar products. You should smother it on your lips before going to sleep for the best results.
