Causes

Why do you get ingrown hairs on the bum? Read on to get bits of information about what causes them.

1. Poor shaving – inappropriate removal

To begin, one of the often reasons why you end up these hairs curled back into the skin is using improper techniques while removing hair from the bottoms.  They include shaving too close, using inappropriate tools, blunt razors and lack of moisturizing skin before cutting off the strands.

How often do you shave your butts? Frequent shaving means that you would experience the problem more often than not. If you shave too close to the skin surface, the cut hairs leave a sharp and pointed tip that curls back so easily.

The curling back and irritation can also cause swelling around the hair follicle as its tip remains beneath the skin.

Lack of sterilized or clean shaving tools will increase the risks of getting an infection. It is crucial that you clean and you disinfect your shaving or removal machines if you are going to use the same tools more times.

2. Irritation and not shaving your butt area

Besides hair removal, constant irritation from sitting on hard surfaces and tight clothes is another cause. The irritation happens due to the sensitivity of the buttock area (especially the inner surfaces).

Now, if you leave hairs to overgrow, there are high chances that some will break while seating. As the hair follicle regrows, its tip may fail to project out usually leading to them becoming ingrown.

The other thing is putting pressure on or around the hairs especially after shaving. This will most likely cause their tips to cause more irritation. As a result, bumps will form leaving these tip trapped back beneath the skin.

Lastly, too tight clothes (jeans, bikini, among others) can increase irritation primarily if you shave often.

3. Accumulation of dead skin

Lack of exfoliation and cleansing means that you are more likely to get hair ingrown occasionally. If you have hairy buttocks, the buildup of dead skin cells over longer periods will lead to blockage (clogging) follicles.

Infection and symptoms

How do they become infected? Bacteria (staph infections) is one of the common causes of infections.

If you get a painful bump on the butt surface or inside the ‘bum cheeks’ it would be due to this problem or pimples. Ingrown hairs which become infected can cause pain just like pimples would do.

Infection could result from touching, scratching or popping with dirty tools and hands. Individuals with increased perspirations or sweat excessively are prone to infection due to bacteria.

How to tell if they are infected

You can say whether you have an infection in ingrown hairs if you notice or experience the following.

  • Painful bumps on buttocks or the inner buttocks. Sometimes it could be excruciating while seating down or trying to make leg movements
  • Aching or painful pulsations around the affected area
  • Frequent itching
  • If the infection is severe, you will most likely see a discharge in the form of pus oozing out

How to get rid of (infected) ingrown hairs – treatment

Sometimes, they require treatments if the problem does not resolve on its own. In some other cases, one should see a doctor or derma if the infection worsens your symptoms.

Even though getting solutions to this problem can be easy when it is detected, and appropriate measures are taken. Do not ignore ingrown butt hairs. Here is how to deal with them, especially the infected ones.

Regular exfoliation

This is by far one of the best ways to deal with and avoid them even after shaving. Exfoliation ensures that the dead skin that could obstruct the hair from growing out of the follicles is removed. Select suitable products such as non-comedogenic products.

Exfoliation should be regularly done (preferably twice a week).

Treatment and relief remedies

Treatment after exfoliation is recommended when you notice that the symptoms of infection do not go away. The following are some of the methods used in their treatment some of which you can do at home.

There are medicines to reduce swelling, redness, and pain. Ask your doctor to prescribe proper medication according to the severity of the symptoms of this problem.

b.  Honey and turmeric powder

This is one of the home remedies for many skin problems. Honey and turmeric have quality natural antibiotic properties to fight bacteria thus prevent further infections.

Mix 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric powder and 1/2 half-full honey and stir well to uniformity. Apply it using a piece of cotton. Leave it to absorb for 10 minutes. You can also wash it or may leave it on if you want.

c.  Dilute tea tree oil

Tea tree oil is another natural antibacterial product that will help fight bacterial infections. Also, it will prevent the redness caused by irritation due to bacterial activity. For good results, apply it on the butts and leave it to stay overnight.

d. Warm compress

Warm compressing is a simple remedy to relieve the symptoms such as swelling and pain especially if they become infected.

e.  Go for incision or drainage

Infections would typically cause swelling and pain especially if you touch your butt area regularly. Irritation from tight-fitting clothes can also aggravate swelling. If you notice too much swelling and pus formation it is time to consult a physician.

After a careful examination of the area, your physician will determine whether the ingrown hairs cause it and apply the most appropriate technique (drainage or incision) to remove the hairs.

He or she will also prescribe medicines to deal with pain, swelling, and germs.
